Southern Soul takes center stage with new single from J Wright
CALION, AR – Southern R&B and Soul singer J Wright is baring his soul for all the world to see with a new single “My Soul,” which is currently available on all digital distribution sites. The single is the first song of an upcoming album, also called “My Soul,” that he hopes to release by the end of 2018. According to J Wright, the single was written in the aftermath of a long relationship that left him hurting and wondering what happened. Lyrics from the song – such as You cheated on my soul / lied on my soul / played with my soul / messed with my soul are J Wright’s way of being transparent with his fans while also displaying emotions that he knows almost anyone can connect with. Like all of his music, the single features the distinct sound and style of an artist who has been singing all his life.
“J Wright’s voice is J Wright’s voice,” he said. “When you hear Al Green, you know it’s Al Green. I’m expecting that once my voice is heard, people will be able to say it’s me immediately. My voice is natural – I didn’t wake up one morning and just try to sing. I can go way back to a whole lifetime of singing. And now I’m trying to take that history – all those years that I’ve proven myself – to the next level. This is the next step of my journey. I’ve had some great experiences that have brought me to where I am today, and now I’m ready to give this a shot and put my soul out there with a song and album that everybody can relate to.”
J Wright is an R&B and soul singer who started at the age of 5 while singing in the church choir. Throughout the years he has performed with many different choirs and Gospel groups all over the South. As a child growing up in southern part of Arkansas, he saw many things while being weaned on blues, R&B, soul and Gospel music in the house of a preacher. He has performed throughout his entire life. He was formerly a member of the Gospel Angels. He sang with the Wright Crusaders. He opened for some of the bigger names in Gospel music. And all along the way he continued to develop and evolve as an artist. Today he takes those influences and marries them with a persona that young people will enjoy – including style and fashion, from a thug-looking, smooth-talking, easy-going, Ghetto sweet guy leading them through his journey…but all coming from the heart and soul.
“I started to really get into R&B and Soul, and became a big fan of Freddie Jackson, DeAngelo, The Ohio Players and Al Green” he said. “I like a lot of the old-school artists, and some of my style reflects that. But when people look at my fashion and style and then hear my music, they often don’t think I look like the way I sound. I’ve always been a lead singer, but I’m also an all-around entertainer.”
J Wright said he plans to go on a “My Soul” tour after releasing the album, and would love to have one of his stage plays of the same name developed for the theater.
