Deep South rapper explores diverging life paths
with new album ‘Torn’
PASCAGOULA, MS – In a little town on the Gulf of Mexico, an hour-and-a-half from New Orleans, there’s a young artist named Geai-3 (pronounced “Jay”) whose unique take on hip-hop will have fans of the genre wondering what he’s all about.
A wide range of influences over the years have combined with his Deep South heritage and a distinct Creole sound into a style of music that is unlike anything else out there. Growing up he listened to Gospel and Blues music, and would frequently perform Otis Redding or BB King songs in his home for his family as a child. As he grew older he began to enjoy Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and Lil Boosie, who turned him toward a more traditional hip-hop sound and helped him develop his elementary poetry into rich rap lyrics. Some of his rock artist influences include Elton John, Disturbed, Panic! At the Disco, System of a Down, and Linkin Park. Today, as he’s grown more mature in his career as an artist, he is more of an explorer with his sound, and tends to lean closer to the progressive hip-hop stylings of rappers like Juice Wrld.
“I’m definitely with new way of hip-hop,” Geai-3 said. “Once I got to college I started exploring new avenues and thought I could take music seriously and maybe change some people’s lives. Music helps you get through the day – whether you’re sad or depressed or happy or whatever. I want my music to influence change and influence communities. Even if I can’t help you face-to-face, if you hear my songs maybe it’ll help you get through your day a little easier. That’s what I want my music to be about.”
Geai-3’s first album was “Inferno the Streets” and now his second album, “Torn,” is slated to be released on Sept. 6. He has always been a member of high caliber athletic teams, but even though athletics have been a major part of his life, he is ready to devote his career to music.
“I understand people who deal with depression and anxiety and who are torn on what direction to go when there are a lot of negative things going on in their lives,” he said. “With this album, I speak on energies and different religious aspects and the demons and dark thoughts that can surround you. I’m making music that leads you away from those things and helps you maneuver through things like that in life. Each song is a different element of things I’m torn against.”
Three singles from the album are already starting to receive high praise from fans who have heard them. The first is “Substance Abuse (You’ll Be Ok).” It’s a song with an upbeat vibe that’s reminiscent of Juice Wrld’s “Lucid Dreams.” Geai-3 said he hopes people will jam out to it and enjoy it while also appreciating the fact that he’s actually talking about some deep stuff.
The second single is “Skeleton,” and explores the idea that everyone has a skeleton in their closet – a thing from the past that they’re ashamed of. The song encourages people to overcome their shame and embrace the defects that make them human. The third song is the liveliest of the album, called “Lucky.” Geai-3 described it as a car banger with a really good vibe that’s a lot of fun to listen to.
