Hey DJ Nia Boom tell us where you’re from and what inspired you to become a DJ
Im originally a Cali girl, lived in Florida for a while but now reside in New York City. I became a DJ because I’m inspired by the hiphop culture. Music is my life, my father is a bass player and my mom worked at the first radio station in PA. Being able to be a voice in this industry is a blessing.
New York one of the fast moving cities in the music business. What would you say are some of the hardest things you had to overcome while learn the music business?
Damn right its fast and if you can’t keep up you will get ran over! lol trust that. You gotta have tough skin to not only survive in New York City but this industry as well. One of the hardest things I’ve had to overcome is to stay consistent no matter what. No matter what others are doing move at my own pace. I have learned to just be myself and stay in my lane. If you work hard and stay consistent you will get to where you wanna go.
Some artist think being a DJ is someone who just plays music. Explain what a DJ really is to the music industry.
The Dj provides the soundtrack to your life. We are responsible for not only breaking new music but we providing the atmosphere when you go to the club, wedding, etc.. We control the crowd and make the world move, we are archeticts of sound.
How did you get involved with Fleet DJ’s?
I’ve been apart of the Fleet Djs for over 5 years. I saw the movement from afar and thought it was dope so I hit up Klassik and the rest is history. I now Manage the NY Division and the StraightOfficial.com affiliate.
What are some of the common mistakes you see artist make today in the music industry?
The common mistake I see artist make is they don’t come into the industry with a plan and understand what a brand is. Everybody is not gonna make it to superstar status but you can still be successful in your own right if you plan and know what you want to get out of it. These days you have to be a brand. Music is not the product you are, so you have to focus on building that.
We read that you are founder of a woman empowerment group called Rok Candii. Tell us more about this group?
Rok Candii is a movement that I am working on with a mission to unite like minded women in the industry. The idea behind the name is that a woman can be sweet but also hard and not easily to cracked. Like I said before, you gotta be stronger than most to be in this industry and have a strong network and woman are very powerful and can do more when we unite.
Are their any artist your currently working with if so who or who would you like to work with in the future?
I am currently working with an artist out of Brooklyn named 12G. You can check out his work on my site NiaBoom.com or his Social Media @Remember12G. I would definitely like to work with other hardworking artists that are hungry and ready to work. I am also working on my own EP which I hope to release this year.
You also started your own web series ‘Behind the Grynd”. Talk to us about your web series and where can we find previous episodes.
Behind the Grynd is my baby 🙂 I have been working on it for a couple years and it features artists, executives and tastemakers in the entertainment industry. My last episode with Sky Zoo was so dope Shoutouts to him and everyone who has been apart of the production. I am always looking for interesting, harding working individuals for features so hit me up!
What is your definition of Grynd?
The Grynd is the Hustle .Doing what you HAVE to do, not what you want to do. It is a 24/7 effort you make to get where you want to be.
What advice would you give to other females that want to become a DJ?
Do it and Do it well… Work on your craft and don’t let nobody tell you that because your a woman you will never be as good as a man. We have to work 10x harder sometimes but thats what we do anyways 😉
Any shout outs?
I gotta shoutout everyone who supports me, my friends and family, I truly appreciate you, my Fleet Fam, My Bro MSmif RIP, My boo and of course The Grynd Report.
