Jurors have sentenced white supremacist Dylan Roof to the death penalty for the heinous crime and shooting deaths of nine people at a church in Charleston, South Carolina. Almost 19 months ago Roof entered a church and let off numerous rounds on nine innocent black men and women.
The jury found him guilty of 33 counts for the attack. The deliberated for about 3 hours and was able to reach a unanimous verdict. Roof showed no sign of remorse nor any facial expressions as his verdict was announced. However; it was roof who kindly and coolly confessed to the killings and then justified them without remorse. His family remains silent on this incident and says that they’ll never understand why he did this to good people. But in Roof’s voice “it had to be done”.
Roof will become the first federal hate crime defendant to be sentenced to death. Judge Richard Gergel will formally sentence Roof on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. ET. Roof, who represented himself during the penalty phase, told Gergel he wanted to file a motion for new lawyers. Gergel said Roof can argue that on Wednesday but he is not inclined to let that happen.
A group of defense attorneys and others who worked on Roof’s behalf issued a statement, saying the death penalty decision means the case will not be over for a “very long time.”
“We are sorry that, despite our best efforts, the legal proceedings have shed so little light on the reasons for this tragedy,” the statement said.
